A bunk bed is about the only piece of bedroom furniture that is taller than the person carrying it, and it comes with two mattresses. It almost always has to come down from the top: ladder, top mattress, slats, rails, then the upper frame.
That takes two adults and more floor space than people expect. On most wood beds the bolts are long and have been tight for years.
What this covers
- Twin over twin (38 x 75 in each) and twin over full
- Wood and tubular metal
- Beds with stairs or a trundle, if you tell us first
- Both mattresses
- Beds already taken apart and stacked
What helps us quote it
Tell us the type of bed and what is built into it. A bed with stair storage or a desk underneath is a different job from a plain two-level frame. If the manual is around, leave it on the bed. Move toys and small furniture out of the way so the rails can come down flat.
Thinking of passing it on instead? Our bunk bed guide includes a tape-measure check of the guardrails and openings, based on the list CPSC gives resellers.
Doing it yourself?

Questions about bunk bed removal
Do I need to take the bunk bed apart first?
No. If you would rather do it yourself, the guide gives the order. Take your time, and use two adults.
Are the mattresses included?
Tell us how many are going when you call, so the estimate counts them.
Can you take a loft bed?
Ask us. Lofts are built differently and we would want to know what is underneath before we quote it.
Could the bed be given to another family?
It can, if it is safe. CPSC's guidance for resellers lists what to check, including two guardrails on the top bunk with tops at least 5 inches above the mattress. In Albuquerque, Beds4Kidz says twin and bunk sizes are what it needs most.
